1. Product Description
This product is a microbial insecticide based on the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis. The active ingredient consists of spores and specific protein crystals (Cry toxins) that are toxic upon ingestion by the larvae of target insect species. It is formulated as a Wettable Powder (WP) to be mixed with water for spray application.
2. Target Pests (Strain Dependent)
Bt kurstaki (Btk): Effective against a wide range of leaf-eating caterpillars (Lepidoptera) such as Cabbage Looper, Tomato Hornworm, Gypsy Moth, and Diamondback Moth.
Bt israelensis (Bti): Specifically targets mosquito, black fly, and fungus gnat larvae.
Bt aizawai (Bta): Effective against wax moths and certain other caterpillars like the Greater Wax Moth.
Bt tenebrionis (Btt): Targets certain beetle larvae (Coleoptera), like Colorado Potato Beetle.
3. Mode of Action
Bt must be ingested by the larval stage of the insect to be effective. The toxin acts in the insect's midgut, causing cell rupture, paralysis, and cessation of feeding. Death typically occurs within 1 to 3 days.
4. Application Instructions
Timing is Critical: Apply when target pest larvae are young and actively feeding. Early application is more effective.
Mixing: Shake the product well. Add the recommended amount of WP to a small volume of water in the spray tank to form a slurry. Then, fill the tank with the remaining water while maintaining agitation.
Spraying: Apply as a thorough, uniform spray, ensuring complete coverage of all plant surfaces, especially the undersides of leaves where larvae often feed.
Agitation: Maintain constant agitation in the spray tank to keep the suspension uniform.
Re-application: Reapply every 5-7 days or as needed, depending on pest pressure. Reapplication is necessary after heavy rain, as the product can be washed off.
5. Precautions & Storage
Toxicity: While harmless to humans and animals, avoid direct contact with skin and eyes. Wear appropriate protective clothing (gloves, mask, goggles) during handling and mixing.
Environmental Considerations:Highly toxic to non-target caterpillars, including those of butterflies and moths. Apply with care in areas where their conservation is desired.
