One Spray, Two Weed Types: Agricultural Herbicide for Pakistan's Smallholder Cotton Fields
April 26, 2026
Pakistan's cotton belt — spanning Punjab and Sindh — is dominated by smallholder farms averaging 2–5 hectares. These growers face grass weeds like barnyardgrass alongside broadleaf competitors including Trianthema portulacastrum and Digera arvensis. With limited access to mechanized spraying and tight margins on input costs, a product that controls both weed types in a single application matters more than it does on large mechanized operations.
An agricultural herbicide pairing Trifloxysulfuron 10 g/L and Haloxyfop-P-Methyl 100 g/L in OD formulation delivers dual-mode control from one tank mix. The product carries registration numbers PD20130366 and PD20210910 and is approved for cotton, sugarcane, and soybean.
Dual Action Reduces Spray Passes
Trifloxysulfuron inhibits ALS enzyme in broadleaf weeds, disrupting branched-chain amino acid production. Haloxyfop-P-Methyl targets grass weeds by suppressing meristematic tissue growth. For a smallholder who hires a single spray application per season — or operates a backpack sprayer personally — covering both weed groups with one pass reduces labor, fuel, and equipment rental costs.
Cotton's metabolic pathway rapidly degrades trifloxysulfuron into non-active compounds, protecting the crop. Haloxyfop-P-methyl is inherently selective for broadleaf crops. The combination is safe for cotton at labeled rates.
Practical Formulation for Field Conditions
The OD (Oil Dispersion) formulation does not separate in storage, even when kept in non-climate-controlled conditions common on small farms. This eliminates the need for constant agitation and reduces the risk of uneven application — a genuine concern when the person mixing the spray may not have technical training.
