توضیحات محصول
Chlorpyrifos 5% Granular (GR) is a soil-applied insecticide containing 50 grams of chlorpyrifos per kilogram of granular carrier. As an organophosphate acetylcholinesterase inhibitor, it delivers broad-spectrum contact, stomach, and fumigant activity against soil-dwelling and root-feeding insect pests.
The granular formulation enables convenient at-planting soil application, providing extended residual protection during critical early crop establishment. First commercialized in the 1960s, chlorpyrifos became one of the most widely used organophosphate insecticides globally, valued for reliable efficacy, low cost, and versatility across agricultural, turf, ornamental, and structural pest control.
Chlorpyrifos (IUPAC: O,O-diethyl O-3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridyl phosphorothioate) is an organothiophosphate with molecular formula C₉H₁₁Cl₃NO₃PS and molecular weight 350.59 g/mol. It is a crystalline solid with very low water solubility (~1.4 mg/L at 25 °C) and high lipophilicity.
The mechanism proceeds through metabolic activation: cytochrome P450 enzymes convert chlorpyrifos to chlorpyrifos-oxon, the biologically active metabolite and potent irreversible acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitor. This AChE inhibition places chlorpyrifos in IRAC Mode of Action Group 1B.
The 5% GR formulation consists of chlorpyrifos impregnated onto inert granular carriers—typically clay, attapulgite, or corn cob grits—manufactured to uniform 16-30 mesh size with bulk density 0.7-0.9 g/cm³ and attrition resistance above 90% to minimize dust generation.
- Broadcast application: Uniformly distributes granules across the field followed by mechanical incorporation
- Band application: Places granules in a narrow strip over the seed row, reducing total product use 50-70%
- In-furrow application: Delivers granules directly into the planting furrow at seeding for maximum early-season protection
Recommended rates generally range from 15 to 30 kg formulated product per hectare. Soil moisture significantly influences efficacy, with adequate moisture activating granule release and enhancing vapor movement.
Chlorpyrifos 5% GR controls a broad spectrum of soil-dwelling arthropods including:
- White grubs (scarab beetle larvae)
- Wireworms (Elateridae larvae)
- Mole crickets
- Cutworm larvae
- Root maggots and aphids
- Subterranean termites
Major registered crops include field and sweet corn, sugarcane, peanuts, soybeans, small grains, turfgrass, forestry and ornamental nurseries, and non-crop industrial areas.
Chlorpyrifos exhibits moderate persistence in aerobic agricultural soils with reported half-lives ranging 30-120 days. Strong adsorption to soil organic matter results in very low leaching potential and minimal groundwater risk under normal use.
| Ecological Concern | Impact Level |
|---|---|
| Aquatic invertebrates | Highly toxic (acute values often below 0.1 μg/L) |
| Freshwater and marine fish | Highly toxic (96-hour LC₅₀ in low microgram-per-liter range) |
| Honeybees | Highly toxic by direct contact |
| Birds | Moderate toxicity (acute oral LD₅₀ of 10-100 mg/kg) |
The European Union banned all agricultural chlorpyrifos uses effective January 2020. The United States banned all food crop uses effective February 2022, though certain non-food uses remain under state-level regulation. In developing markets across Africa, Asia, and Latin America, chlorpyrifos 5% GR remains widely registered and commonly used.
Alternative Options:
- Chemical alternatives: Neonicotinoid seed treatments, diamides, phenylpyrazoles
- Biological alternatives: Entomopathogenic nematodes, fungi, and Bacillus thuringiensis products
- Cultural practices: Crop rotation with non-hosts and adjusted planting dates
Chlorpyrifos 5% Granular insecticide remains a historically significant soil pest control tool continuing to play an important role in global agriculture, particularly in developing markets. Its broad-spectrum efficacy, convenient granular format, and favorable cost-performance ratio have made it a standard treatment for various soil pests.
Responsible stewardship—including calibrated equipment, integrated pest management, resistance-aware rotation, and strict safety requirements—remains essential to maximize utility while minimizing human health and environmental risks.
