Broadleaf Weed Pressure in Semi-Arid Cotton: An Agricultural Herbicide for Turkey's Aegean and Southeastern Regions

April 26, 2026

Turkey ranks among the world's top ten cotton producers, with cultivation concentrated in the Aegean coastal zone and the southeastern GAP region. These areas share a common problem: broadleaf weeds like Xanthium strumarium, Amaranthus retroflexus, and Datura stramonium compete with cotton for limited soil moisture during the dry summer months. Irrigation is available but expensive, and weeds that intercept water before it reaches the crop root zone cut directly into yield.

An agricultural herbicide combining Trifloxysulfuron 10 g/L and Haloxyfop-P-Methyl 100 g/L in OD formulation targets the broadleaf spectrum while adding grass weed control. Registration PD20130366 and PD20210910.

Broadleaf Focus, Grass Insurance

Trifloxysulfuron inhibits ALS enzyme in broadleaf weeds, starving them of branched-chain amino acids. The compound moves both upward and downward within the weed after absorption through roots, stems, and leaves — reaching growing points wherever they are. Cotton metabolizes trifloxysulfuron rapidly into non-active compounds, which explains the crop's tolerance.

Haloxyfop-P-Methyl covers the grass component. While broadleaf weeds dominate in Turkey's cotton, grass species like Setaria viridis and Echinochloa crus-galli appear in mixed populations, particularly in irrigated fields. Having both modes in one application prevents grass weeds from filling the gap left after broadleaf control.

Heat and Drought Performance

Haloxyfop-P-Methyl maintains activity under the high-temperature, low-moisture conditions common in southeastern Turkey during July and August. The OD formulation stays in stable suspension even when stored in hot field-side conditions, ensuring consistent concentration from first spray to last.
