Grass Weed Dominance in Colombia's Sugarcane: How an Agricultural Herbicide OD Formulation Responds
April 26, 2026
Colombia's Cauca River Valley produces sugarcane under tropical conditions where grass weeds outcompete broadleaf species for dominance. Species like Rottboellia cochinchinensis and Digitaria sanguinalis germinate in flushes after each rainfall, reaching competitive height quickly in the 25–30°C temperature range that defines the region. Controlling grass pressure without damaging the sugarcane ratoon requires a product with both grass activity and crop selectivity.
An agricultural herbicide combining Trifloxysulfuron 10 g/L and Haloxyfop-P-Methyl 100 g/L in OD formulation targets the grass spectrum while maintaining safety for sugarcane. Registration numbers PD20130366 and PD20210910 apply.
Grass Activity With Broadleaf Backup
Haloxyfop-P-Methyl handles the primary grass weed pressure. Absorbed through foliage and translocated throughout the plant, it suppresses meristematic tissue from seedling emergence through early heading and tillering. Both annual grasses and perennials like bermudagrass respond to adjusted application rates — a practical consideration in a region where mixed grass populations are the norm.
Trifloxysulfuron adds broadleaf control to the same application. In sugarcane, the active ingredient is rapidly metabolized into non-active compounds, giving the crop a metabolic shield that broadleaf weeds lack. The result is a single spray that covers the full weed spectrum rather than leaving broadleaf species unchecked.
Tropical Storage Without Separation
The OD formulation resists physical separation in the high-temperature, high-humidity storage conditions typical of Colombian sugarcane operations. Uniform suspension means consistent dose delivery across the entire spray run, whether the applicator is working a 10-hectare plot or a 500-hectare plantation.
